About Merge 2048
Merge 2048 is a sliding number puzzle played on a 4 × 4 board. Each move pushes every tile as far as it can go in one direction. When two tiles with the same number collide, they merge into one tile worth their sum: two 2s make a 4, two 4s make an 8, and so on.
After every move a new 2 (or occasionally a 4) appears in an empty square. The goal is to keep merging until you create a 2048 tile. It sounds simple, but the board fills up quickly, and one careless move can trap a big tile in the middle where it’s hard to use.
How to play
- Press Play to start with two tiles on the board.
- Use the arrow keys or W, A, S, D — or swipe on the board — to slide all tiles in that direction.
- Tiles with the same value merge when they touch. The merged value is added to your score.
- A new tile appears after every move that changes the board.
- Reach 2048 to win. You can then keep playing for a higher score until no moves are left.
Tips and strategy
- Pick a corner and keep your largest tile there. Most strong players use a bottom corner.
- Favour two directions (for example down and left), use a third when needed, and avoid the fourth whenever possible — it tends to pull your big tile out of its corner.
- Build a “chain” along the bottom row in descending order, such as 256 – 128 – 64 – 32, so merges cascade toward the corner.
- Keep the row with your big tile full. If it has a gap, a new 2 can appear there and block your chain.
- Think about where the new tile will spawn. Leaving only bad empty squares can force a move you don’t want.
Frequently asked questions
What happens after I reach 2048?
You get a congratulations message and can choose to keep going. Tiles above 2048, such as 4096, are possible with careful play.
Why didn’t a new tile appear?
A new tile only appears when your move actually changes the board. If nothing can slide in that direction, try another one.
Is there an undo button?
No. Every move counts, which is part of the challenge.
